What is the point of drug testing in sport?

One purpose of drug testing is to catch athletes that are doping - for them to test positive. Additionally, testing is designed to deter doping - the possibility of being tested will ideally deter individuals from doping altogether or, at a minimum, stop them from showing up at the race for fear of testing positive.
