National Festival Kicks-off With Masters Time Trial Competition

SOMERSET, Pa. (July 6, 2007) - The first national championships of the 2007 USA Cycling National Festival at Seven Springs presented by California Giant Berry Farms were handed out on Friday. Thirty-one masters cyclists rode away with a stars-and-stripes jersey at the end of today’s time trial competition.

More than 450 masters riders contested the time trial course on Hwy. 219 in Somerset, Pa. Riders in groups from ages 30-34, all the way to 80-85 raced for national titles and stars-and-stripes jerseys in 31 categories.
The nightcap, the men’s 50-54 category competition, turned out to be the most hotly contested individual race of the day with the top five riders within less than two minutes of each other. Last year’s top finishers in that category, David Zimbelman (White Salmono, Wash./Z-Team Racing) and Kent Bostick (Knoxville, Tenn./AMD Masters), fought it out for first and second place for the second year in a row, with Zimbelman coming out on top once again.
Richard Feldman (Ketchum, Idaho/Durance Cycleworks) turned in the fastest 30-kilometer time of the day, crossing the line at 29:50.86 to take home the stars-and-stripes jersey in the men’s 35-39 category. Kristin Sanders (West Palm Beach, Fla./Aaron’s Corp Furnish) beat out the most crowded women’s field of the race with a 30-kilometer best time of 33:34.41 in the 35-39 category.
In the tandem time trial, Bryan Lofton (Orange Park, Fla./Jacksonville Racing) and James Wright (Orange Park, Fla./Jacksonville Racing) turned in the best tandem time of the day at 31:11.03.
Of the categories racing the 20-kilometer course, Ruth Clemence (Newport Beach, Calif./Simple Green) blew away the field in the 45-49 age group with a time of 28:15.70, good enough to put her amongst the top ten men in her age group. Gordon Paulson (Cottage Grove, Wis./Spring Street Sports) earned the fastest 20-kilometer men’s time with a 26:27.39 while competing in the 55-59 age group.
The USA Cycling National Festival at Seven Springs presented by California Giant Berry Farms continues tomorrow , July 7, with the criterium competition for age categories 50+ taking place in Somerset, Pa.
