Race Age
Your "racing age" for aged-based categories are determined by racers age on December 31st, 2017.

XC Category Splitting
Age groups will be added by the race director based on PRE-REGISTERED demand. Those classes with 40 or more racers will be broken down by the nearest 5 year age increment. For example, if there are 40 Beginner Males PRE-REGISTERED for the race and 50% are under 35, that category will split into Beginner Men 34-Under and Beginner Men 35+. Category splitting will happen after pre-registration closes, a few days before the race.

XC Category Consolidation
A category that has fewer than five (5) PRE-REGISTERED racers may be combined with another similar class. This may include combining one category with another. For example, if there are only 3 pre-registered Masters Women 35+ teams and 4 pre-registered Beginner Women Open riders, they will be combined into a single Women Open category. This category consolidation will happen after pre-registration closes, a few days before the race.

3-HOUR Solo Category Splitting
Age groups will be added by the race director based on PRE-REGISTERED demand. Those classes with 40 or more racers will be broken down by the nearest 5 year age increment. For example, if there are 40 Beginner Males PRE-REGISTERED for the race and 50% are under 35, that category will split into Beginner Men 34-Under and Beginner Men 35+. Category splitting will happen after pre-registration closes, a few days before the race.

3-HOUR Category Consolidation
A category that has fewer than five (5) PRE-REGISTERED racers or teams may be combined with another similar class. This may include combining a 2-Person category with another 2-Person category class. For example, if there are only 3 pre-registered Duo Women 80+ teams and 4 pre-registered Duo Women Open teams, they will be combined into a single Duo Women Open category. This category consolidation will happen after pre-registration closes, a few days before the race.

Why the Name “Wolf Bouncer” and "Wolf Cooler"?
It just so happens that several Northern Virginia parks are home to big white-tailed deer. These bucks (and their herd of does) rule these parks with a DC attitude, and the business end of their sharp, pointee antlers. Although they tend to steer clear of most visitors, they have at times given local mountain bike riders the "what for" by blocking trails, jumping out of bushes, or just giving everyone who rides by a hard stare. We have affectionately called these guardians "Wolf Bouncers" -- since we're sure no wolf would stand a chance against these tough trail bosses. So we named our race after them! But in bar and club lingo, the leader of a team of bouncers is the Cooler, or in this case the "Wolf Cooler". This is the one bouncer to rule them all. Since we've had three years of races without a single wolf sighting, we're sure this tough trail boss is the coolest cooler of them all!
