Masters men take on snowy course for Day 4 of CX Nationals

January 6, 2017 (Hartford, Conn.) -- An inch of snow covered the Riverside Park course on a chilly Friday morning in Hartford to start Day 4 of the 2017 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships. Six masters men’s events were featured, along with three non-championship races. Snow melted on the course throughout the day, creating greasy lines and challenging off camber sections.

Slick conditions opened the non-championship races for men and women in the 11-22 age groups. Eighteen-year-old Drew Sotebeer (Parker, Colo./Alpha Bicycle Co.-Vista Subaru) rode his way to a win in the men’s non-championship event in 30:57. For the women 11-22 non-championship, 15-year-old Bridget Tooley (Frisco, Texas/Dallas Racing) held off a charging Petra Schmidtmann (Nederland, Colo./Van Dessel Factory Team) for a victory in 24:00.

The Stars-and-Stripes jersey for the men’s 30-34 category was earned by Isacc Neff (Madison, Wisc./Neff Cycle Service) for completing the course in 39:01, 19 seconds ahead of Scott Chapin (Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz Factory Racing).
The reigning elite men’s 35+ Pan Am champion, Chris Drummond (Oklahoma City, Okla./SPCX pb R.K. BLACK), captured the win in the men’s 35-39 category in 39:40.

Matthew Timmerman (Fulton, N.Y./Cannondale) repeated as the men’s 40-44 champion, hitting the line in 40:42.
Scoring a second podium spot for the week was Adam Myerson (Dorchester, Mass./Cycle-Smart), holding on to the lead after a bobble on the final lap to win the mens’s 45-49 in 41:37, two seconds ahead of Matt Davies (Boulder, Colo./Boulder Cycle Sport / YogaGlo).

Last year’s silver medalist in the men’s 50-54, Craig Cozza (Presto, Penn./UPMC / Pro Bikes) claimed the top prize this year in the same division, winning in 42:00.

Kevin Hines (East Wareham, Mass./Corner Cycle Cycling Club) led wire to wire for the men’s 55-59 victory, crossing the line in 41:38.

Ten teams mixed it up for the mixed team relay non-championship, won by TEAM CLIF BAR Cycling in 30:25, more than one minute ahead of Team Rock Lobster & Friends.

Featured races on Saturday include events for men and women in juniors and singlespeed categories. Championship races on Sunday will feature Under-23 and elite competitions for the top women and men across the country.
