Meet the Athlete

Lawson got his start in cycling through his dad who was a professional downhill racer and rode to stay fit after he had children. He would join his dad on the back of a tandem and then eventually started racing at the Alkek Velodrome when he was 10 years old. Lawson’s 6th place in the Men’s Time Trial at the World Championships was the best performance we’ve seen for an American since Taylor Phinney took silver in 2012. One of the biggest and most unexpected stories of the 2018 Tour De France put Lawson in the news. On the first day of the tour, he crashed in the feed zone. He finished the stage with blood pouring down his face from a laceration above his eye and a broken scapula. He wasn’t sure how long he could race, but pledged funds toward the Alkek Velodrome for each stage he completed. He finished all 21 stages of the 3-week race and raised over $200,000 for the velodrome in his hometown of Houston after damage from Hurricane Harvey. Lawson loves the sport, and the cycling community as a whole and always wants to keep it fun
