Cycling officials meet in Colorado for education and networking


Colorado Springs, Colo. (March 15, 2013) –USA Cycling hosted the nation's cycling officials last weekend, March 8-11, at its biennial National Officials Summit.
Even after many travel plans were disrupted or cancelled due to winter weather on the east coast, 92 officials attended the weekend event which was held at USA Cycling's new conference center.
“The second biennial summit was a big success," said USA Cycling Technical Director Shawn Farrell.
"We had excellent presentations on a wide range of topics, but the overall themes were team building and enhancing the member experience."
In addition to offering a great time for officials to gather for receptions and networking, the summit allowed them to hear from presenters on many important topics. The highlight of the event was the presentation on team building from guest speaker Joan Powell, Director for the National Association of Sports Officials. The other quality presentations spanned all levels of officiating expertise, including:
  • USA Cycling Branding and the Stakeholders of Cycling – presented by Steve Johnson
  • UCI Bicycle Regulations – presented by USAC National Technical Commission member and UCI Equipment Commission member Randy Shafer
  • Proper Radio Usage in Caravans – presented by National Technical Commission Member Chuck Hodge
  • New Officials Code of Ethics, Disciplinary Policies, USAC Insurance Program Summary – presented by National Technical Commission member Tod Manning
  • Leadership – presented by National Commissaire Steve Stone
  • Local Associations and Officials Programs – presented by Bonnie Walker and Jim Patton
  • Mentoring Programs – presented by Bonnie Walker, Dot Abbott, and Steve Stone
  • Enhancing the Member Experience – presented by Bonnie Walker, Katie Compton, Marco Vasquez, and Mimi Newcastle
