Baranoski eliminated in keirin 1st round repechage in Rio

August 16, 2016 (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) – Matt Baranoski (Perkasie, Pa.) contested the men’s keirin in Rio on Tuesday where he was eliminated in the first round repechage.

In round one, he was in the fourth heat and only the top two out of seven racers advanced. He placed fifth which sent him to the repechage rounds later in the morning. In the repechage, his fourth-place effort kept him from advancing to the later rounds.

“It was definitely a step up from the World Cups and World Championships this year. Everyone’s on form here. It was going rail to rail from the motor pulling off to the finish line,” said Baranoski, who leaves Rio on Wednesday to return to school. “It’s been an honor to be here and represent my country. Now I’m an Olympian. It didn’t end up quite the way we wanted but sometimes there’s nothing you can do about it.”

The keirin final takes place at 5:15 ET today and you can watch live at
