Team Omnium Standings After Mountain Bike Nationals

Following a close battle at mountain bike nationals, the collegiate team omnium standings are up for grabs by anyone with three events remaining in the 2017-18 school year.

The overall omnium saw significant changes after the 2017 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships in Missoula, Mont. With three more events left this school year, the respective titles are still wide open as schools continue to fight for position on the top step.

In the Division I Club omnium, Virginia Polytechnic University and the University of Colorado Boulder are tied after winning the Track and Mountain Bike National Championships respectively. Both teams finished in the top three for the 2016-17 school year and a repeat victory would not be a surprise for the buffs from Boulder. Right on their wheels is the Texas State University, San Marcos team. Texas State has not won a championship, but has scored points at both Track and Mountain Bike National Championships, earning them their third place. Though with only eleven points separating the top five schools the Division I Club title is shaping up to be a great contest.

The United States Military Academy leads the Division II Club omnium with the largest lead of any school. With a National Championship titles at Track and points at the Mountain Bike National Championship, it will be difficult for either University of Vermont or third-place Colorado School of Mines to make up any ground.

Marian University, the favorites to win the overall Division I Varsity award after having done so the previous five years, has a single point lead over Colorado Mesa University. The Division I Varsity omnium is anyone's to take, with Fort Lewis College a mere sixteen points behind the top step as well. These three schools are likely to compete at the remaining three events in the omnium, with a tight battle expected all the way until Road Nationals in May.

Finally, Belmont Abbey College, in their second year as a varsity program leads to Division II Varsity pack over mainstay Midwestern State University. Coming in third is Mars Hill University, winners of the 2016-17 omnium. Like several other omnium competitions, this race will be close with only a seven point spread between the three schools leading into the remaining events of the school year.

The next event on the Collegiate Omnium schedule is the USA Cycling Cyclo-Cross National Championships Reno, NV.
