Women’s team pursuit sets national record at Track Worlds

(March 3, 2016) – The U.S. women’s team pursuit squad set a new American record en route to qualifying first on Thursday at the 2016 UCI Track World Championships in London.

The team of Kelly Catlin (Arden Hills, Minn./NorthStar Development), Chloe Dygert (Brownsburg, Ind./TWENTY16 p/b SHO-AIR), Sarah Hammer (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Jennifer Valente (San Diego, Calif./TWENTY16 p/b SHO-AIR) posted a 4:16.180 run, besting second-place Canada by more than four seconds and smashing the former national record of 4:24.279.

The American run on Thursday was also the second-fastest women’s team pursuit effort of all-time. Australia holds the world record of 4:13.683, which was set Feb. 19, 2015, at the 2015 UCI Track World Championships in France.

Kim Geist (Emmaus, Pa./Chester County Cycling Foundation-Team Alliance Environmental) finished 17th in the women's scratch race on Thursday. Laura Trott (GBR) took gold in the event, followed by silver medalist Kirsten Wild (NED) and bronze medalist Stephanie Roorda (CAN).

Team USA will take on Australia in the first round of the women's team pursuit on Friday. A win would give the Americans a berth in Friday night’s gold medal matchup against the winner of Canada vs. New Zealand. In addition to the women's team pursuit, Jake Duehring (Irvine, Calif./GS Ciao) will take on the men's omnium individual pursuit scratch and elimination races, while Ian Holt (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Armed Forces Cycling Team) will challenge the men's points race on Friday. Visit tissottiming.com for live timing and schedules. The evening session will also be streamed live on NBC Sports Live Extra. Coverage begins at 2 p.m. EST.
