This past weekend Ripon College held the MWCCC mountain bike season opener at Nordic Mountain located in Wisconsin.  The venue is home to the Subaru Cup Pro XCT race and uses very similar courses which provide not only spectacular racing, but great spectating for fans as well.

Downhill kicked off the season Saturday morning with newly designed course which added enough length to count the better of two runs, rather than combining them like previous years.  Defending National Champion J.D. Swanguen (Lindsey Wilson College) started his campaign strong this year with a big win, along with his teammate, Josh Patton, in second.  Jason Blodgett came in a solid third place, showing himself as a real threat this year’s Omnium classification in Banner Elk, N.C.  On the women’s side, Vhasti Schmidt (LWC) found herself taking the win, as Crystal Kalogris (Marian University) and Lindsey Prososki (LWC) came in second and third.  Later in the day the XC races took place as omnium leader Drew Dillman (Marian) took a commanding win and the strong LWC duo of Travis Monroe and Kenneth Hall took second and third.  Kaitlin Antonneau (Marian) showed up and won the women’s race as the Ripon College freshman duo of Corrie Osborne and Sophia Marchiando worked their way to second and third.

Sunday’s events featured short track and a team relay, new for 2013.  Both Dillman and Antonneau won their short track races while Hall and Blodgett rounded out the top three for the men.  Osborne showed her strength again as she took another second place along with the conference omnium leader, Lindsey Durst (Lindenwood University) finished a strong third.  The team relay proved to be a fun-packed event as teams lined up along the start/finish area in rows waiting to head out for their leg of the race.  Marian took the win with the team of Dillman, Antonneau, and Blodgett.

This weekend’s race will be held in Indianapolis, IN at Marian University and features both track and mountain bike racing, including 4X on their BMX track.  Racing kicks off Friday night and carries through the weekend at the Indy Cycloplex providing a great scene for a big weekend of racing.
