Valente Dominates Omnium at Track Nationals


Carson, Calif. (August 4, 2017) –The 2017 Junior and Elite Track National Championships continued at the VELO Sports Center on Friday with six national titles awarded in the junior 17-18 and elite categories.
Olympic silver medalist Jennifer Valente (San Diego, Calif./Sho-Air TWENTY20) swept all four events to capture the elite women’s omnium with 185 points. Colleen Gulick (Spring City, Pa./Pickle Juice Pro Cycling) won the silver medal with 160 points, and Christina Birch (Los Angeles, Calif./Keirin Cut Jeans + nuun) took the bronze with 141 points.
In the elite women’s sprint final, Madalyn Godby (Louisville, Colo./Bicycle Racing Association of Colorado) and Mandy Marquardt (Allentown, Pa./Team Novo Nordisk) battled for three rounds before Godby prevailed as national champion. Julia Sante (Queensbury, N.Y./Sprinter’s Edge Track Development Team) won the bronze medal.
James Mellen (Schnecksville, Pa./Sprinter’s Edge Track Development Team) won two straight sprint finals over Joe Christiansen (Lyons, Colo./Star Track) to claim the men’s elite sprint gold medal. Evan Thomson (Breignsville, Pa./Redbeard Racing) and Jamie Alvord (Allentown, Pa./Sprinter’s Edge Track Development Team) needed three races to determine the bronze medal winner, with Thomson taking the deciding race to claim bronze.
In the elite men’s omnium, Daniel Holloway (Boulder, Colo./Texas Roadhouse Cycling Team) prevailed with 149 points to take the Stars-and-Stripes jersey ahead of Ashton Lambie (Lawrence, Kan.) who totaled 134. The bronze medal went to Zachary Kovalcik (Portland, Ore.) with 127. With 24 riders, it was the largest elite men's omnium field since it was introduced.
Zachary Gottesman (Greenbrae, Calif./NCCF/Team Specialized Juniors) won three of the four races to take the men’s 17-18 omnium title. He raced to victory in the morning’s scratch race, then swept the evening events with wins in the elimination race and points race. Gottesman took the final sprint in the points race to break a tie with Justin Butsavage (Macungie, Pa./T Town Elite).


In the junior women's 17-18 omnium, Alijah Beatty (Washington, Iowa/NorthStar Development Cycling) took top honors, followed by Sawyer Taylor (San Rafael, Calif./JAKROO presented by Chrome Industries) and Mckenzie Steiner (Del Mar, Calif./Swami's Junior Development Team).
Racing will conclude on Saturday with elite points races and keirins.
