USA Cycling announced today that after two years of outstanding results, Marcello Albasini is resigning as director sportif of the U23 division of USA Cycling’s National Development Program to take a leadership position with a newly formed Swiss Pro Continental Team.

Under his guidance, U23 riders in the USA Cycling National Development Program have garnered exceptional successes, most notably last month’s overall win by Joe Dombrowski (Marshall, Va./Bontrager-Livestrong Team) in the GiroBio (Baby Giro).

Albasini, who managed the U23 program through his company Alba Radsport, will manage USA Cycling’s U23 program through Dec. 31, 2012.

“Marcello has done an outstanding job of providing the experience and instruction necessary for our next generation of cycling greats to make successful transitions to professional careers,” commented USA Cycling’s VP of Athletics, Jim Miller. “The results produced by our U23 program over the past two seasons are a testament to his strong leadership. It’s no surprise that many pro teams would want Marcello’s services.”

In addition to Dombrowski’s win last month, the program has boasted other important accomplishments such as podium places at the 2012 Liege Bastogne Liege and a top-five finish at this year’s Ronde de L’Isard. In 2011, the program enjoyed third- and fifth-place finishes overall at the U23 Paris Roubaix and Liege Bastogne Liege.

“Marcello will be missed,” Miller went on. “We have already begun the search for his replacement and I am confident that our national development efforts will continue to launch young American cyclists into the international spotlight just like they have for the past decade.”
