Univest ends 14-year title sponsorship, UCI/NRC Grand Prix to cont

Univest Corporation very recently decided to not renew its title sponsorship of the Univest Grand Prix for 2012 and beyond. Univest will instead focus on aiding local nonprofits, which are struggling in the economic downturn. Despite that, the race will continue in 2012, under new sponsorship and maintain its status as a UCI 1.2 and USA Cycling National Racing Calendar (NRC) 1.HC race.

“Univest has been a strong and unwavering supporter of international cycling for 14 years,” stated race director John Eustice, “We thank them for their longtime commitment to the sport and for helping build a vibrant community of fans, participants, sponsors and civic authorities around the events. That community will move forward with a dynamic new Grand Prix for 2012.”

The event will continue and maintain its UCI and NRC status.
The event will continue and maintain its UCI and NRC status.
The event, which began in 1998 as an international amateur-only bicycle road race based out of Souderton, PA, expanded into a second day in Doylestown in 2003, was awarded UCI status in 2006, and became the first-ever UCI and NRC ranked event in 2011. The race was renowned for its beautiful and challenging race courses, strong international fields, excellent media coverage and close community ties. Every Univest Grand Prix road race was televised, with live coverage beginning in 2006.

The Cyclosportif 100K recreational ride, an early innovation of the promotion that anticipated the current Gran Fondo popularity by a decade, will remain a strong and vital component of the two-day event.

“Community participation is what makes this race so special,” said Eustice. “Thousands of people have consistently joined together to open their homes to the teams, volunteer on the race courses, come to spectate or ride the Cyclosportif, not to mention the sponsors, police, mayors and civic authorities, all who work in common cause to create a fine international sporting event. I especially would like to thank Christopher Shinners, David Henninger and Rick Grater, without whom there would have never been one, let alone 14 Univest Grand Prix’s.”

Sparta Cycling is looking forward to next September 15 and 16, for the 2012 edition of the Grand Prix. This international event is the final major battleground of the North American racing season. Sparta Cycling, Pennsylvania communities, and USA Cycling remain committed to the continued growth and international standing of this legacy event.
