The other two American riders competing in the road race, Carmen Small (Durango, Colo./Specialized-lululemon) and Tayler Wiles (Murray, Utah/Specialized-lululemon), were disqualified Saturday due to a ruling by the UCI chief commissaire that their bikes didn’t meet the minimum weight restrictions per UCI rules.

After the road race, the top 15 finishers each had her bike weighed by commissaries. Small finished third in the race and Wiles finished, provisionally, in the top 10 in the race before each was disqualified.

USA Cycling statement:

“USA Cycling and our women’s team were stunned and disappointed with the decision of the commissaries at the Pan American women’s road race championship to disqualify two of the U.S. women’s team riders for allegedly competing on bikes that did not meet the UCI minimum weight requirement. Neither representatives from the U.S. team staff nor the two riders were present when the bikes were weighed after the race finished. Representatives of the team were not given the right to question or appeal the decision. Small and Wiles have been competing in UCI races in Europe all spring on the team bikes that they used at the Pan Am road championships. We would expect the highest level of officiating and conduct at the Continental Championships since they serve as automatic qualifiers for the World Championships.”

Earlier in the week, Small overcame a crash caused by a loose banner on the course fencing to finish second in the elite women's time trial. Small had a commanding lead in the time trial before the loose banner caused her to crash.
