Pro CX: Wyman and Powers surface atop standings
The competitors on the USA Cycling Professional Cyclo-cross Calendar (Pro CX) remained busy the past two weeks. The riders contested the Gateway Cross Cup-Cross After Dark in St. Louis on Sept. 26, NEPCX Gran Prix of Gloucester 1 and 2 in Gloucester, Mass., on Sept. 29-30 and NEPCX Providence of Cyclo-cross Festival on Oct. 6-7.

Jeremy Powers (Easthampton, Mass./Team Rapha-FOCUS) finished in the top five in four of the the five races to help him rack up 390 points and top the Pro CX men's standings. Powers won the NEPCX Gran Prix of Gloucester 1 and the NEPCX Providence Cyclo-cross Festival to bolster his point total. Nicholas Bazin (FRA/Team Auber 93) is only 22 points behind with 368 points while Ben Berden (BEL/Raleigh-Clement) sits in third place with 253 points. Berden appeared in the top five of each of the last five Pro CX races, including winning the Gateway Cross Cup on Sept. 26. Timothy Johnson (Topsfield, Mass./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com) is only eight points behind Berden in fourth place with 245 points. Ryan Trebon (Bend, Ore./Cannondale-Clement), who won the second race in Gloucester, rounds out the top five with 216 points.

Two riders from Great Britain are threatening to ride away with the top two spots of the Pro CX women's standings. Helen Wyman (GBR/Kona Factory Team), who won four of the last five Pro CX races, has amassed 540 points to hold the top spot. Gabriella Day (GBR/Team Rapha-FOCUS) finished second in three of those five contests and has accumulated 366 points to sit in second place. Arley Kemmerer (Saylorsburg, Pa./C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) is the top-ranked American through five weeks of the calendar with 206 points. Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Trek Cyclocross Collective) won the Gateway Cross Cup in St. Louis on Sept. 26 and now has 180 points to rank fourth. Crystal Anthony (Beverly, Mass./LadiesFirst Racing) is only one point behind Compton in fifth place.

The Pro CX calendar is chocked full of races over the next two weeks. The action begins in Fort Collins, Colo., on Oct. 13-14 with the USGP of Cyclocross – The SmartWool Cup p/b FC Bikes. The action continues the following weekend with the Downeast Cyclocross NECX in New Gloucester, Maine, and Spooky Cross Weekend in Pomona, Calif., on Oct. 20-21. |
