Pro CX: Trebon claims top spot in elite men's rankings
This season's USA Cycling Professional Cyclo-cross Calendar (Pro CX) concluded its 2012 side with three recent events: the USGP of Cyclocross – Deschutes Cup in Bend Ore., and the rescheduled Supercross Cup in East Meadow, N.Y., on December 8-9, and the North Carolina Grand Prix in Hendersonville, N.C., on Dec. 15-16.
Men
Ryan Trebon (Bend, Ore./Cannondale-Clement) won day one of the Deschutes Cup, the final UCI C1 event on the 2012/13 Pro CX calendar, and took second a day later to propel himself into first in the elite men's rankings. He leads Jeremy Powers (Easthampton, Mass./Team Rapha-Focus) by 14 points. In third is Jamey Driscoll (Winooski, Vt./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com), who has a slim four-point lead over Ben Berden (BEL/Raleigh-Clement). Tim Johnson (Topsfield, Mass./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com), who beat Trebon in Bend on the second day of the Deschutes Cup, remains in fifth.
The Supercross Cup was won by Dan Timmerman (Clay, N.Y./RGM Watches - Richard Sachs) on day one and Kerry Werner (Banner Elk, N.C./U23 BMC Development Team) on day two. A week later, Werner took second to Brian Matter (Sheboygan, Wisc./RACC - Gear Grinder) on the first day of the North Carolina Grand Prix before swapping spots with him and taking the win on day two.
Women
With two wins at the Supercross Cup, Laura Van Gilder (Cresco, Pa./Mellow Mushroom) earned a spot in the women's top five. The standings above her remain unchanged, with Helen Wyman (GBR/Kona Factory Team), Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Trek Cyclocross Collective), Crystal Anthony (Beverly, Mass./LadiesFirst Racing), and Arley Kemmerer (Saylorsburg, Pa./C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) holding first through fourth, respectively.
Katerina Nash (CZE/Luna Pro Cycling), currently ranked sixth, swept the women's races at the Deschutes Cup. 13th-ranked Amanda Carey (Victor, Idaho/Volkswagen Boise Cycling) rode to two wins in North Carolina.
Junior Men
The standings that saw the most movement recently were those for the junior men. After sweeping both days of the Deschutes Cup, Logan Owen (Bremerton, Wash./Redline) moved up to the number one position. He leads Spencer Downing (Boulder, Colo./Clif Bar Development Cyclocross Team) by just two points, while previous juniors standings leader Curtis White (Delanson, N.Y./Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team) dropped to third. Maxx Chance (Boulder, Colo./Clif Bar Development Cyclocross Team) used second- and third-place finishes in Bend to jump to the fourth spot, three points ahead of Tyler Schwartz (Newport Beach, Calif./Surf City Cyclery-Sterling BMW).
