2013 Road Development Race Series announced
Colorado Springs, Colo. (January 25, 2013) – USA Cycling’s initial 2013 Road Development Race Series (RDRS) has been announced.
Designed to promote high-quality racing opportunities for young cyclists, the RDRS strives to develop long-term partnerships with race organizers who will create safe and fun racing opportunities for junior and espoir-aged men and women.
The RDRS currently includes nine events and kicks off Saturday, January 26, with the two-day 2013 Spring Fling of Cycling in Deland, Fla. The next race in the series is the Valley of the Sun Stage Race, February 15-17 in Phoenix, Ariz. March features three events: the Tucson Bicycle Classic in Tucson, Ariz., the 11th Annual Chris Hinds FUJI “Sunshine” Criterium in Charlestown, R.I., and the NWA Spring Classic Road Race in Prairie Grove, Ark.
The series picks up again with the Chris Lillig Memorial Cup and Old Capitol Criterium on April 27-28 in Iowa City, Iowa. That same weekend is the Binghamton Circuit Race in Binghamton, N.Y. May sees the Quad Cities Criterium in Rock Island, Ill. Wisconsin’s four-day Tour of America’s Dairyland concludes the series in June.
This marks the 21st consecutive year USA Cycling has worked with race directors to create a junior development series of road races. With the aim of increasing the quantity and quality of road racing opportunities for young, USA Cycling-licensed riders in the United States, the RDRS also aims to identify and recognize potential world-class cycling talent at the junior level.
The series acts as a possible entry point to USA Cycling's Athlete Development Pathway. This pathway provides riders with a road map to follow from beginning racing experiences through training camps to international competition. Top finishers at races in both series will have the opportunity to qualify for one of USA Cycling's Regional Talent ID Camps.
Race directors interested in including their event on the RDRS should contact National Events Manager Tony Leko at email@example.com.
