USA Cycling congratulates Rock Hill, S.C. on Giordana Velodrome
The 250-meter track is part of a 250-acre Rock Hill Outdoor Center that will also feature a BMX Supercross track, cyclo-cross course, mountain bike course, trails and more on the city’s riverwalk along the Catawba River.
As the third velodrome built in the U.S. in the last decade, its grand opening serves as a testament to our country’s renewed interest in track cycling in recent years. The Rock Hill facility is the 27th velodrome in the United States. See a list of velodromes in the U.S. here.
“The city of Rock Hill should be very proud of this world-class facility,” said USA Cycling President & CEO Steve Johnson. “The Giordana Velodrome will provide elite and developing athletes with the racing and training environment they need for success. Additionally, the velodrome will not only attract top-level cyclists to the Rock Hill community, but will also encourage an increased level of local participation that is critical to sustain our nation’s ever-growing interest in track cycling.”
Nearly 1,000 people turned out for the velodrome’s unveiling where the honorary first ride went to a group of 12 children. The velodrome will offer free classes for kids and beginners, as well as programs for people of all ages and abilities.
“Not only do we expect that it will contribute significantly to economic development efforts and serve as our newest sports tourism venue, but that it will provide health and wellness opportunities for all of our citizens,” commented Rock Hill Mayor, Doug Echols. “I anxiously await the day when Rock Hill produces our first track cycling star and they count the Giordana Velodrome as their home track."
