Officially Recognized Varsity Teams

There are a few things that distinguish varsity teams from club teams. First, they have a USA Cycling licensed coach. In addition, they receive a greater degree of school funding. In order to be recognized as a varsity program by USA Cycling, teams have to meet three of the four following criteria:

1.      Recognized by school as varsity program
2.      Awards at least $10,000 in athlete scholarships per year
3.      Team pays entry for most collegiate races
4.      Attends at least two USA Cycling Collegiate National Championships each year

In order to be recognized, teams that meet these criteria must fill out the Application for Collegiate Varsity Status.

Teams that are making visible efforts to attain Varsity status with USA Cycling are considered Emerging Varsity Teams.

Additionally, some teams offer scholarships that are not necessarily varsity programs. You can find a list of these teams here.
