Powers won the women’s prologue on Tuesday, followed by sprinter Tara Whitten (CAN/Keller Rohrback Cycling Team) and the rising star Alison Starnes (Mill Valley, Calif./TIBCO). Cheatley finished first in Wednesday’s opening stage to take the overall lead. Abbott came in second, with Cheatley’s teammate and countrywoman Rushlee Buchanan in third. 2008 Olympian Erinne Willock (CAN/Webcor) won Stage 2 on Thursday, and Abbott posted another runner-up finish to take the overall lead. Powers was third. The leader won Friday’s third stage to extend her advantage over Cheatley and Willock. Two-time Olympian Joanne Kiesanowski (NZL/TIBCO) won the criterium on Saturday, as Cheatley trimmed her deficit with a ninth-place finish, ten spots ahead of Abbott. Whitten won the final stage on Sunday, and Abbott and Cheatley both came in 42 seconds behind her to solidify the final standings.
In the men’s prologue, Sutherland finished third after Trek-Livestrong teammates Jesse Sergent (NZL), a bronze medalist at the 2008 Olympics, and Alex Dowsett (GBR), the 2010 U23 European time trial champion. Sutherland finished second in Wednesday’s opening stage behind teammate Marc De Maar (AHO), a two-time national champion in the Netherlands Antilles. His back-to-back podium finishes vaulted the Australian into the overall lead, which he never relinquished. In Stage 2, a 15.5-mile time trial, Sutherland finished third behind countryman Ben Day (Fly V Australia) and Sergent. Raymond Kreder (NED/Holowesko Partners) navigated a crash-filled final sprint to win Friday’s third stage, with Darren Lill (RSA/Fly V Australia) finishing second and Sutherland in third. David Tanner (AUS/Fly V Australia) won Saturday’s downtown criterium, followed by Steve Reaney (San Jose, Calif./California Giant Cycling) and Ben Jacques-Maynes (Watsonville, Calif./Bissell Pro Cycling). Dowsett won Sunday’s final stage, an 83-mile circuit race, with Bissell teammates Frank Pipp (Boulder, Colo.) and Andy Jacques-Maynes (Corralitos, Calif.) claiming the second and third podium spots.
Cheatley and Buchanan anchored Colavita-Baci in its victory in the team competition, while Abbott led Peanut Butter & Co. Twenty12 to second place and Powers paced Vera Bradley to a broze medal. The trio of Day, Lill and Tanner led Fly V Australia to the men’s team title, while Pipp and the Jacques-Maynes bothers paced Bissell to a runner-up finish. Sergent and Dowsett guided Trek-Livestrong to third place.
