Race Director Certification and License FAQs

Club

Beginning August 1, 2014 the Level C race director certification will be available for free to everyone and can be found in the person's My USA Cycling account under either account or tools. They can find the Level C manual and exam there. Be sure to list that member as a club race director in your Manage Club tool. Upon completion of the Level C certification that individual will be given a complimentary club race director to permit events under that club.
No, you now have the option to change your club to a race director organization. If you would like to make that change or if you would like to set up a new race director organization please contact your USA Cycling member service coordinator for assistance.  
In 2014 any club contact can be listed as the race director on a permit. In 2015, only certified and licensed race directors will be able to permit a competitive event under a sponsoring club. Level C certification will be free to anyone who wishes to complete it beginning August 1, 2014 and can be found in your USA Cycling account under tools or account. Upon complete of certification a listed club race director will be given a complimentary club race director license to permit events under that club.
Yes, any club contact can be on the permit for an event in 2014. In 2015 only certified and licensed race directors can permit a competitive event with their club. Any club contact can permit a race  in 2014, so there are no additional fees for races promoted by the same club. In 2015 a club race director will be required to complete Level C certification to permit a competitive event and can do so for free. Upon completion of certification the listed club race director will receive a complimentary club race director license to permit events with that club.
If you are the president of the club or a club contact you can log into your My USA Cycling account and go into manage clubs. Once there, under the club info section you should see a section labeled event organizers. Underneath is a blue add an organizer link. This will take you to a page where you can add the club member. Once you've added the member and that member has completed the Level C race director certification, our system overnight will automatically add a complimentary club race director license. The member can find the Level C material and exam in their My USA Cycling account under account, under race director resources. 

Race director certification

Level B certification is 10 online webinars that will be released monthly from July 2014 and on. To obtain Level B certification you must first be a Level C certified race director. You can then complete the 10 webinars and exams to obtain the Level B certification.

Though, the level C online education and testing will be available for free for anyone to complete on August 1, 2014 to meet the certification requirement for 2015. In 2015, at a minimum, Level C will be required for any club race director who wishes to permit a competitive event with their club. For those holding a stand-alone race director license they will need to complete at a minimum a Level C certification to permit any type of event. 
No, a certification is issued to the individual who completes the education and passes the exam for that level. This certification does not apply to anyone other than that individual. If a club sponsors a series and each individual race director is listed under that club all events can be permitted under the club as long as everyone has at a minimum a Level C certification. Beginning August 1, 2014 Level C certification is free to anyone who wishes to complete it and will be a requirement to permit a competitive event with a club in 2015.
Level C is currently available to all licensed race directors and to one member of a USA Cycling registered club. Beginning August 1, 2014 Level C will be available to anyone who wishes to complete it and can be found in your My USA Cycling acount under both tools and account. As of July 23, 2014 Level B certification became available with the first webinar of the curriculum.

Race director license

A race director license is a license that recognizes the professional race director and enables an individual to permit event without a sponsoring club. It also allows the licensee to run and vote for various Sport Committee positions.  
$150 for the calendar year and can be purchased through your my USA Cycling account using the "Purchase/Renew License" option above your name on your My USA Cycling account home page.  
No, this is not a racing license this license allows an individual to permit an event.
No, a race director license is a license that enables an individual to permit an event without a club affiliation. Certification is a professional certification given to an individual who has gone through the education module and passed an exam showing proficiency on that level's topics.

 
The race director license and club registration are two different memberships. The race director license allows an individual to permit events without a club affiliation. Clubs can still permit events without purchasing a race director license. Though, in 2015 to permit a competitive event with a club an individual must have completed at a minimum the Level C certification. To permit any type of event in 2015 for a stand-alone race director with a race director license you must complete at a minimum the Level C certification.

There is not a discount, but beginning August 1, 2014 Level C certification will be available to anyone to complete for free. Also with this change any club listed race director who completes certification will receive a complimentary club race director license to permit events with that sponsoring club. With these changes the club race director license won't be assigned to certified club race directors until September. 
Sign in to your My USA Cycling account or create one using the Sign in button on the top right hand side of the USA Cycling homepage. Under your My USA Cycling account home page above your name using the Purchase/Renew License link. You'll then click the Non-Racing License/Manuals title and this will open to a number of licenses. You'll select race director license and proceed to your cart.
