Local Associations set to gather in Colorado Springs this weekend

Colorado Springs, Colo. (November 3, 2009) -- This weekend will see 30 of USA Cycling’s 34 Local Associations (LA), as well as seven of USA Cycling’s Collegiate conference directors, gather in Colorado Springs for the national governing body’s fifth annual Local Association Summit.

The three-day conference, scheduled for November 7-9, will provide grass roots racing leaders from across the nation with the chance to network and discuss best practices.

“The Local Association Summit is an important opportunity to discuss grassroots initiatives,” explained USA Cycling CEO Steve Johnson. “American cycling has experienced tremendous growth over the last decade, and much of that growth stems from hard work and dedication at the local level.”

USA Cycling staff members, including CEO Steve Johnson, will address the LA representatives during their sessions at the Pro Rode Hall of Fame.  Among the topics to be covered are insurance and risk management, customer service, continuing education for officials, and methods for garnering media attention. Additionally, there will be an open forum where participants can focus on issues like budgeting, fundraising, reinvesting funds back to local riders, process improvements, and dealing with non-compliance.

“It’s a time for LA’s to get together and identify the opportunities and obstacles they encounter while working to grow the sport at the grassroots level,” explained USA Cycling’s Local Association Manager Frederike Blattspieler.

Colorado Springs Visitors Bureau Vice President, Pam Sherfesee, will talk to the LA’s about how to use their local Visitors Bureau to their advantage, and Vicki Lyons of the Carolinas Cycling Association will give a presentation on growing participation among women and juniors. Timing and insurance companies will be among the exhibitors at the Friday night Affinity Fair where participants will be able to meet up with cycling industry product and service providers.
