Davide Frattini and Laura Van Gilder take the early leads as 'Cross season gets under way

Cyclo-cross season officially began in the U.S. this weekend as the first four events on the USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Racing Calendar were contested.

Christian Heule (SUI/Rendementhypo Cycling Team) and Helen Wyman (GBR/Kona) picked up the pro men’s and women’s victories at Star-Crossed Cyclo-cross in Redmond, Wash. on Saturday. Also on Saturday was the Nittany Lion Cross in Trexlertown, Pa. in which Davide Frattini (ITA/Team Fuji) and Laura Van Gilder (Cresco, Pa./C3 Sollay) collected the men's and women's wins. Sunday featured the Rad Racing Gran Prix in Lakewood, Wash. where Jonathan Page (Northfield, N.H./Planet Bike) and Susan Butler (Portland, Ore./Monavie-Cannondale.com) rode to the top of the podium. The Charm City Cross also took place in Baltimore on Sunday where David Frattini and Laura Van Gilder both took their second wins in as many days in the elite men's and women's contests. With two wins under their belts in just the first weekend of racing, David Frattini and Laura Van Gilder took dominating early leads in the men's and women's individual USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Racing Calendar standings. Following the first four of 42 events on the 2009/2010 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Racing Calendar, the current standings are as follows:

Men's Standings
1. David Frattini (ITA/Team Fuji) 60
2. Christian Huele (SUI/Rendementhypo Cycling Team) 50
3. Jonathan Page (Northfield, N.H./Planet Bike) 45
4. Adam Myerson (Dorchester, Mass./Mountain Khakis) 35
5. Mike Garrigan (CAN) 32

Women's Standings
1. Laura Van Gilder (Cresco, Pa./C3 Sollay) 40
2. Sue Butler (Portland, Ore./Monavie-Cannondale.com) 35
3. Maureen Bruno-Roy (Arlington, Mass./MM Racing) 30
3. Helen Wyman (GBR/Kona) 30
4. Alison Dunlap (Colorado Springs, Colo./Luna) 27
5. Rebecca Wellons (Woburn, Mass./NEBC) 22
