Menzies scores at Elk Grove, Zirbel grabs NRC lead

Karl Menzies (AUS/OUCH-Maxxis) used consistent performances throughout the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar's richest event, the Tour of Elk Grove, to take home the $25,000 GC winner's prize. Menzies finished third, second and 11th in the three-stage event to edge BMC's Brent Bookwalter (Banner Elk, N.C.) by a mere seven seconds for the overall crown.

Tom Zirbel (Boulder, Colo./Bissell) finished third in the overall at Elk Grove to leap frog Rory Sutherland (AUS/OUCH-Maxxis) and take over the NRC men's lead after 20 of 26 events. With Elk Grove a men's-only NRC event, Alison Powers (Boulder, Colo./Team Type I) continues to lead the women's individual standings. Colavita-Sutter Home p/b Cooking Light leads the men's team standings while Team Type I remained in the top spot on the women's side. The latest version of the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar standings is as follows:

A pair of North Carolina races will highlight the NRC's 18th week August 8 and 9. The Presbyterian Hospital Invitational will go off in Charlotte on the eighth followed by the Hanes Park Classic in Winston Salem on the ninth.
