WEEKLY WRAP-UP: JRs ready for Road Worlds, MTBers shine in WC

Boswell 2nd overall at La Gleize; JR MTBers shine in Bromont World Cup

In preperation for the upcoming UCI Junior Road and Track World Championships, USA Cycling Junior National Team riders finished third overall at the Liege-La Gleize in Belgium. USA Cycling supported junior mountain bikers also fared well last week grabbing two podium placings in the cross country event at the Bromont World Cup event.

JUNIORS

USA Cycling's Junior National Team finished third overall in the team category of the Liege-La Gleize in Belgium over the weekend. Using the race as prep for the UCI Junior Road World Championships, the team was led by Ian Boswell (Bend, Ore./Hot Tubes) who finished second overall in the general classification. Thanks in part to a superb team effort, Lawson Craddock (Houston, Texas/Hot Tubes) also earned the Best Young Rider jersey and Nathan Brown (Covington, Tenn./Hot Tubes) the KOM. The fully supported squad of junior riders making up the USA Cycling All-Star squd at the North American World Cups continued their success in Bromont bringing home two podium placings. All six junior male riders once again finished inside the top 20 with Zach McDonald (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Classic Cycles) leading the way on the podium in fourth and Seth Kemp (Campobello, S.C./Carolina Cycles) finishing seventh. On the women's side Jill Behlen (Boulder, Colo.) grabbed a podium spot with an impressive fourth-place finish. For complete results from the World Cup event, click here.

U23

Cole House (Oneida, Wis./BMC) used a third-place result in the opening stage to grab 12th overall after three stages of the 2.12-rated Tour de Namur in Belgium. Austin Carroll (Orange, Calif./BMC) currently sits in 19th while Daniel Holloway (Morgan Hill, Calif./Garmin-Holowesko-Felt) holds 26th after three of the event's five stages. Six u23 riders also contested the elite cross country race at the Bromont World Cup under the USA Cycling banner. The group's top finish was recorded by USA Cycling National Development Team rider Ethan Gilmour (Ludlow, Vt.) who crossed the line in 63rd. For complete World Cup results, click here.

NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM GRADUATES

 

The U.S. secured five medals, including a gold by Jimmy Watkins (Bakersfield, Calif./Momentum-Hawk) at the Pan American Road and Track Cycling Championships in Mexico City. Watkins also unofficially set two new American and Pan American records and earned a Pan Am title in the kilo. Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo./Proman) added to the U.S. medal tally finishing second in the scratch race, third in the 500-meter time trial and third in the keirin. DEVELOPMENT CAMPS

All 11 of USA Cycling's Regional Development camps have wrapped up for 2009. A total of 256 riders participated in the nearly half dozen camps set around the country. USA Cycling will host an invite-only National Talent Evaluation Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Oct. 8-12. COMING UP...

Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif./Proman Hit Squad), Jessica Prinner (South Elgin, Ill./ABD Cycling Team) and Kendall Ryan (Ventura, Calif./NOW-MS Society) will make up the women's squad at the UCI Junior Road and Track World Championships, Aug. 7-15 in Moscow, Russia. The junior men's team will be commprised of Lawson Craddock (Houston, Texas/Hot Tubes), Nathan Brown (Covington, Tenn./Hot Tubes), Jacob Rathe (Portland, Ore./CMG Racing), Gavin Mannion (Dedham, Mass./Hot Tubes), Ian Boswell (Bend, Ore./Hot Tubes), Ryan Eastman (Petaluma, Calif./All Sport-Team Swift), Kit Karzen (Beverly Hills, Calif./NOW-MS Society), Dan Heeley (Los Angeles, Calif./South Bay Wheelmen), and Ian Moir (Long Beach, Calif./Rock Racing). The road time trial will kick off the action on Aug. 7, followed by the road race events on the 9th. The track portion of the event will begin on Aug. 11. USA Cycling National Development Team riders will continue to contest the Tour du Namur in Belgium through Aug. 5. The same group of riders will then take on the Ronde van Antwerpen, Aug. 7-9 from their home base in Izegem.
