Colorado Springs to host Collegiate Cycling Track National Champs
Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sept. 8, 2008) - The USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championships will open 2008-09 Collegiate Cycling season in Colorado Springs on September 11. More than 100 student-athletes are expected to vie for national titles in 11 different events on the track as dozens of schools from all over the nation begin their quest for a 2008-2009 overall national title. The most illustrious of the Stars-and-Stripes jerseys that will be awarded at the 7-Eleven Velodrome over the weekend will be the omnium titles given to the top overall male and female individuals in Division I and II as well as the best overall teams in each division.
Hosted by two of Colorado Springs own, the Air Force Academy Falcons and the Colorado College Tigers, the Collegiate Cycling Track National Championships will feature many of the top institutions from the 2007 USA Cycling Collegiate National Team rankings. Among them Colorado’s own Fort Lewis College is expected to begin their quest to defend the 2007 DI USA Cycling Collegiate National Team Championship. In addition to the host squads, several other local institutions are expected to be out in force including last year’s third and fourth-ranked DI teams, Colorado State University and the University of Colorado-Boulder. In Division II last year’s third-ranked squad, the Colorado School of Mines as well as the seventh-ranked Tigers of C.C. should be well represented. Last year’s winners of the track team omnium in both Division I and Division II, Marian College of Indiana and the U.S. Military Academy, are also both expected to be in attendance.
The event will kick-off with an open track session along with registration and number pick-up on Wednesday, Sept. 10 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Officials will then hold a mandatory rider meeting at the 7-Eleven Velodrome at Memorial Park in downtown Colorado Springs from 7:30 – 8:00 p.m. Competition is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 11. The event is slated to run through Saturday evening with morning sessions beginning at 9:00 a.m. each day and evening sessions at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, September 14 has also been designated an official rain day, meaning any competition that is postponed due to weather conditions will take place Sunday morning.
