Junior Track Nationals close with five more titles awarded

Carson, Calif. (August 17, 2008) – The USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships came to a close today with five new national champions being crowned at the ADT Event Center Velodrome in Southern California.

The final day started out with Eric Meier (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo Sharks) having a stellar ride in the men’s 17-18 ten-kilometer scratch race.  After a breakaway of three riders took control of the race in the final lap, Meier picked up his first stars-and-stripes jersey with a win over silver medalist Lanell Rockmore (Bethlehem, Pa./Gotham Cycling) and bronze medalist Iggy Silva (San Diego, Calif./Team Rock). Epes Harris (Macungie, Pa./JFF) and Dan Heeley (Los Angeles, Calif./South Bay Wheelmen) rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth.

Next up in the women’s 17-18 points race, Colleen Hayduk (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown Inn/Bicyclingworld.com)accumulated 28 points to slip into yet another stars-and-stripes jersey ahead of Mary Costelloe (Emmaus, Pa./South Mountain Cycles) with thirteen points and Shelby Reynolds (Cypress, Texas/Sugar Cycles) with ten points. Elspeth Huyett (Alburtus, Pa./Young Medalists/Team Dual Temp) and Nina Santiago (Dover, NJ/High Gear/Watchung Wheelmen) were fourth and fifth respectively.

In the men’s team pursuit, Team Rock riders Iggy Silva, Alfredo Cruz (San Ysdiro, Calif.), Danny Finneran (Oak Park, Calif.), and Dan Heeley captured the national title over Super Squadron members Jacob Rathe (Portland, Ore.), Alan Ting (Spring, Texas), Austin Stewart (Dallas, Texas/Metro VW), and Lawson Craddock (Houston, Texas/Northwest Cycling).

In addition to the 17-18 national titles awarded this morning, overall omnium competitions wrapped up with the men’s and women’s 15-16 points race events.

Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif./Kahala La Grange) picked up the women’s overall omnium after completing her sweep of the women’s 15-16 events with a win in today’s ten-kilometer points race. Lapping the field once with three other women, Rivera scored 35 points to take the win ahead of Kaitlin Antonneau (Racine, Wis./Nova/IsCorp) and Kendall Ryan (Ventura, Califl./Major Motion Development) who scored 33 and 24 points respectively. The win gave Rivera a total of 28 points in the omnium for which she slipped into a stars-and-stripes jersey. Coming in second in the omnium with ten points was Kaitlin Antonneau while Shelbe Eck (Kutztown, Pa./Alliance Environmental) picked up the bronze omnium medal with 10 points as well.

In the men’s 15-16 points race, Lawson Craddock (Houston, Texas/Northwest Cycling) captured a second gold medal which he adds to the one he claimed yesterday in the eight-kilometer scratch race. With 21 points, Craddock bested Joshua Wade (Wichita, Kan./OZ Racing Team) and Benny Swedberg (Kent, Wash./Rad Racing) who scored eight and seven points respectively. With the points race complete, the final omnium points were tallied and it was Benny Swedberg to take the national title with 22 points. Craddock was second in the omnium with fifteen points and Cory Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Major Motion) was third with nine. Oscar Chavez (El Paso, Texas/Major Motion) and Joshua Wade (Wichita, Kan./OZ Racing Team).
