In the men’s team sprint competition, Team JFF riders Epes Harris, Lanell Rockmore, and Daniel Walker bested Momentum Cycling‘s Dan Heeley, Kit Karzen, and Jesse Marans (Newport Coast, Calif./Momentum Cycling) for the gold medal.
In the women’s team sprint, the powerhouse duo of Colleen Hayduk (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown Inn/Bicyclingworld.com) and Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif./Kahala La Grange) rode for Team Shake ‘N” Bake to take the national title ahead of South Mountain/Allia riders Mary Costelloe (Emaus, Pa./South Mountain Cycles) and Shelbe Eck (Kutztown, Pa./Alliance Environmental).
Colleen Hayduk slipped into her fourth stars-and-stripes jersey of the week with a win in the women’s 17-18 sprint. After defeating Mary Costelloe in the semifinals, she went on to face Shelby Reynolds (Cypress, Texas/Sugar Cycles) in the finals where the two went head to head for two rounds, both taken by Hayduk. In the race for bronze, Costelloe defeated fourth-place finisher Collen Gullick (Spring City, Pa./Colavita Racing) for the podium’s third spot while Devon Simpson (Kirkland, Wash./Team Group Health) claimed fifth place.
In addition to the national championship titles that were awarded on Friday, six riders in the 10-12, 13-14, and 15-16 age categories earned gold medals for individual events that factor into their overall omniums.
Coryn Rivera followed up the success she saw with Hayduk in the women’s team sprint by adding another gold medal to her collection with a win in the women’s 15-16 500 –meter time trial. Her time of 37:512 earned her the top spot on the podium while Shelbe Eck finished in second with a time of 38.888 and Christine Barron (Los Angeles, Calif./Home Depot Center Team) finished third with a time of 39.341.
Benny Swedberg (Kent, Wash./Rad Racing/Hagens Berman LLC) won the men’s 15-16 500-meter time trial to add another gold medal to the sprint gold he won yesterday. With a time of 34:836, he bested silver medalist Cory Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) and bronze medalist Oscar Chavez (El Paso, Texas/Major Motion) who posted times of 36.385 and 36.467 respectively.
In a very exciting women’s 13-14 4-kilometer scratch race, which came with plenty of gutsy moves, Sara Chen (San Marino, Calif./Home Depot Center Team) was the woman to capture the podium’s top spot. She was followed by silver medalist Kaitlyn Lawrence (Emmaus, Pa./VORTEX) and bronze medalist Karla Lopez (El Paso, Texas).
In the men’s 13-14 4-kilometer scratch race, Benjamin Cockrell (Houston, Texas/Spin Cycle) took the win over Michael Dessau (Boulder, Colo./Team 5280/Slipstream) and Kaleb Koch (Glenview, Ill./Smart Cycling)
