USA Cycling 2008 National Championship Calendar Shaping Up

Colorado Springs, Colo. (November 15, 2007)—USA Cycling’s 60,000 licensed racers will have a lot to gear up for in 2008 as USA Cycling announced this week the dates and locations of the majority of its 15 national championship events. The USA Cycling National Championship Calendar offers an opportunity for competitive cyclists of all ages, abilities and disciplines to compete for a coveted stars-and-stripes jersey that signifies a national champion. With the sites for five national championship events still to be announced, dates and venues for USA Cycling’s 10 additional national championship races are set. In 2008, USA Cycling will feature national championship events in the five recognized disciplines of competitive cycling – road, mountain, track, BMX and cyclo-cross.

Eight of the 10 finalized events will be returning to their 2007 host, while two of the announced venues are new for 2008. The newly-renovated Hellyer Park Velodrome in San Jose, Calif. will play host to the USA Cycling Master Track National Championships for the first time in the venue’s history next Sept. 2-7. The new six-day format will allow for shorter racing sessions each day and will give each age group a day for rest and to enjoy some of the country's most popular visitor attractions. Competitors age 30 and up will again compete for individual and team titles in sprint and endurance events in one of the best climates in the country. Another new venue, the 7-Eleven Velodrome in Colorado Springs will host the 2008 USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championships.  September 11-13 hundreds of collegiate tracksters will descend on one of the country’s top outdoor velodromes.

Other notable events which have been finalized are the return of the USA Cycling Mountain Bike Marathon National Championships to Breckenridge, Colo., July 4, the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships to Mount Snow Resort in West Dover, Vt., July 17-20, the USA Cycling 24-Hour Mountain Bike National Championships to 9-Mile County Forest in Wausau, Wis., August 2-3, the USA Cycling Professional and Elite Criterium National Championships to Downers Grove, Ill., August 16-17 and the USA Cycling Professional Road and Time Trial National Championships to Greenville, S.C., August 30-31. The calendar will wrap-up again next year with the return of the USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships to the ADT Event Center Velodrome at the Home Depot Center in suburban Los Angeles, Oct. 1-5, USA Cycling’s Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships to Banner Elk, N.C., Oct. 24-26 and the USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships, which will once again hosted by Wyandotte County Park in Kansas City, Kan., December 11-14.
