USA Cycling Weekly News Update: October 5-10

The USA Cycling Weekly News Update is a feature from the communications department highlighting the latest news and information from USA Cycling, the national governing body for the sport of competitive cycling in the United States.  Issued electronically and available on USA Cycling’s website, www.usacycling.org, this communication piece will focus on competitive cycling across all disciplines – Road, Mountain Bike, Track, Cyclo-cross and BMX – as well as notable items about National Events, Membership and other departments at USA Cycling.

ROAD

  • As the sole American competing at the Franco-Belge, a four-day UCI 2.1-ranked stage race, Tyler Farrar (Wenatchee, Wash./Cofidis) finished 20th in the final general classification, only 26 seconds behind overall winner Gert Steegmans (BEL). Farrar used fifth-place finishes in the race’s first two stages to also earn the fifth spot in the Best Young Rider competition. 
  • With no UCI ProTour events contested in the past two weeks, the United States retained its ninth-place ranking in the season-long UCI ProTour calendar with 213 points. A top-ten finish is necessary for the U.S. to secure the maximum of five start positions in the men’s road race at the 2008 Olympic Games.  Currently, the U.S. sits behind Spain (789), Italy (746), Australia (474), Russia (437), Luxembourg (347), Germany (337), Belgium (281) and The Netherlands (263). France is just behind the United States in 11th with 180 points. Levi Leipheimer (Santa Rosa, Calif./Discovery Channel) remains the top U.S. athlete in the individual standings in 13th place while the lone American team – the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team – is ranked fifth. With two races remaining, the current standings are as follows:

  • The 2007 UCI ProTour is rapidly reaching its conclusion with just two races remaining – Paris-Tours on Oct. 14 and the Giro di Lombardia on Oct. 20.

MOUNTAIN BIKE

  • Attention USA Cycling Mountain Bike Clubs and Race Promoters: USA Cycling and the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) have teamed up again this year to offer seven $500 USA Cycling/IMBA Trail Tune-Up Grants. These stipends are available to mountain bike groups seeking to jump-start various trail improvement projects. Projects that create or improve trails for mountain bike racing will receive the highest consideration, but funding can also be used to improve trails for training and recreational riding. All applicants MUST be a current IMBA member as well as a USA Cycling-sanctioned club or race promoter. USA Cycling/IMBA Trail Tune-Up Grants are completely funded by USA Cycling members through an optional land access check box on USA Cycling license applications and renewal forms and administered through a partnership between USA Cycling and IMBA.   • Attention Mountain Bike Promoters: Applications for the 2008 American Mountain Bike Challenge (AMBC) calendar are now available and the deadline to apply is October 15. For more information on the AMBC, guidelines and application procedures, click here.
  • The 20th event on the 21-race USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Gravity Calendar took place this past weekend. The category-one Rock Mountain G3 Series #3 featured a downhill competition at Angel Fire Resort in New Mexico October 5-7.  The final stop on the G3 Gravity Series saw Kain Leonard (Park City, Utah/Maxxis-Shimano-TLD) take the victory in the men’s pro category with Todd Olsen (Dillon, Colo./Recycle Ski and Sport) and Nathaniel Hills (Dillon, Colo./Mafiaracing.com-ODI), finishing second and third, only seconds behind.  Lisa Myklak (Boulder, Colo./Moorewood-Spyder), Jacqueline Harmony (Tucson, Ariz./Brodie Bikes) and Abigail Hippely (Boulder, Colo./Maverick) placed first, second and third in the women’s pro contest.

  • The only remaining event on the inaugural USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Gravity Calendar is the newly-added Gravity East Finals at Plattekill Mountain in New York, Oct. 13-14.
  • The USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Cross Country Calendar has completed 28 of 29 events and is currently on a two-month break until the season finale at the Piney Hills Classic in Ruston, La., Oct. 27-28.  With one event remaining, the current standings are as follows:

 CYCLO-CROSS

  • USA Cycling announced this week the roster for the first of nine UCI World Cups scheduled for October 21 in Kalmthout, Belgium.  Three men, three women and one junior will represent the United States at the first UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup of the season.  Ryan Trebon (Ventura, Calif./Kona-Yourkey), Jonathan Baker (Boulder, Colo./Vitamin Cottage) and Jonathan Page (Northfield, N.H./Sunweb-Projob) will compete for the men, while Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Spike Shooter), Christine Vardaros (Mill Valley, Calif./Vanderkitten) and Sarah Kerlin (Capitola, Calif./Velo Bella-Kona) will contest the women’s race.  Ian Boswell (Bend, Ore./Hagens Berman) will contest the junior men’s contest. 
  • Registration is currently open for the 2007 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships in Kansas City, Kan., Dec. 14-16.  Entrants can register online by clicking here.   • USA Cycling announced selection procedures for events on the 2007-08 UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup calendar.   • The six and seventh races on the 2007 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Calendar took place this past weekend in Southampton, N.Y.  Erwin Vervecken (BEL) and Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Spike Shooter) took the wins in the elite men’s and women’s contests at the United States’ first category-one race of the season, the Whitmore’s Landscaping Super Cross Cup #1 on October 6.  The current world champion, Vervecken barely held off Barry Wicks (Corvallis, Ore./Kona-Yourkey) in a two-man sprint to the finish at New York’s Long Island Park.  The early leader, Ryan Trebon (Ventura, Calif./Kona-Yourkey) ended up in third, 25 seconds behind the leaders.  In the women’s race, after Canadian Lyne Bessette suffered an early mechanical, it was a one-woman show with Compton running away with the victory by more than two minutes over Bessette, and nearly five minutes over third-place finisher Barbara Howe (Larkspur, Calif./Velo Bella-Kona).  In Sunday’s category-two contest, Wicks came out on top with his teammate Trebon following 17 seconds later.  Jeremy Powers (Niantic, Conn./cyclocrossworld.com) placed third as Vervecken suffered from mechanical issues.  In the Whitmore’s Landscaping Super Cross Cup #2 women’s contest, Compton and Bessette dominated once again with Compton coming out on top and Bessette placing second. Howe completed the podium in third place.

  • Upcoming USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Calendar events include the Gran Prix of Gloucester #1 in Massachusetts and the Java Johnny’s Lionhearts Cross in Ohio, both on October 13.  On October 14, the Gran Prix of Gloucester #2 and Biowheels race will be contested again in Massachusetts and Ohio.

  • The 2007 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships wrapped up last week at the ADT Event Center velodrome in Carson, Calif.   • Six more athletes qualified for the 2008 USA Cycling Track Talent Pool at last weekend’s Elite National Championships.  Bobby Lea (Mertztown, Pa./Toyota-United) and Taylor Phinney (Boulder, Colo./TIAA-CREF) earned spots on the men’s endurance squad, while Adam Duvendeck (Long Beach, Calif./Momentum) and Giddeon Massie (Colorado Springs, Colo./T-Town Express) were added to the men’s sprint squad.  For the women, Dotsie Bausch (Irvine, Calif./Colavita-Sutter Home-Cooking Light) was added to the endurance squad and Liz Reap (Jim Thorpe, Pa./T-Town Express) to the sprint pool.  These athletes join the 12 who previously qualified for spots on the talent pool squad, making a total of 18 eligible riders so far.  The final opportunity for athletes to qualify for the 2008 Talent Pool will be Dec. 11-12 at the ADT Event Center velodrome in Carson, Calif.  The talent pool riders will be the only athletes eligible to represent the United States at upcoming international events such as Continental Championships, World Championships, World Cups and the Olympic Games.

BMX

  • Steven Cisar (Altadena, Calif.) won the invite-only First International BMX Fast Cross in Besnate, Italy on October 7.  Cisar beat out top European competitors Mauro Paiusco (ITA) and Michal Prokop (CZE) to win the category-five international race.     
  • The roster for the fourth and final round of the 2007 UCI BMX World Cup in Frejus, France, October 13-14 is now set. USA Cycling announced a total of 17 of the country’s best riders who will be headed to the south of France to represent the United States.  The 2007 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Frejus is the seventh of 17 events that factor into USA Cycling’s 2008 BMX Rankings – the primary factor which determines the Olympic Long Team for the 2008 Games in Beijing.  In total, 11 of the 14 elite male riders currently ranked in USA Cycling’s 2008 BMX Rankings who are competing for slots on the Olympic Long Team are scheduled to race in Frejus, along with the top-five ranked women and the number-one ranked junior woman. Representing the United States in Frejus will be: Kyle Bennett (Conroe, Texas), Tyler Brown (San Clemente, Calif.), Steven Cisar (Altadena, Calif.), Danny Caluag (Chino, Calif.), Mike Day (Santa Clarita, Calif.), Jarrett Kolich (Santa Barbara, Calif.), Brandon Meadows (Sacramento, Calif.), Matt Pohlkamp (Cincinnati, Ohio), Donny Robinson (Napa, Calif.), Jason Rogers (Mesquite, Texas), Randy Stumpfhauser (Sanger, Calif.), Alise Post (St. Cloud, Minn.), Amanda Geving (Largo, Fla.), Stephanie Barragan (Montclair, Calif.), Kimberly Hayashi (Chandler, Ariz.), Arielle Martin (Clarksville, Tenn.) and Jill Kintner (Seattle, Wash.).

MEMBERSHIP

  • The nomination process for the special election of a new Athlete Trustee to the USCF Board of Trustees has now concluded and three candidates have been announced – Michael Blatchford (Cypress, Calif.), Colby Pearce (Boulder, Colo.) and Steve Tilford (Topeka, Kan.). The elected Athlete Trustee will serve on the USCF Board of Trustees until the position expires in July of 2008 when USA Cycling holds its quadrennial election. Only eligible athletes can participate in the election. In order to be eligible, a USA Cycling member must have represented the United States at the Olympic Games, the Pan Am Games or the World Championships in the last ten years, or finished in the top half of the USA Cycling Elite Road, Time Trial, Track or Cyclo-cross National Championships in the last two years. If you’re eligible to vote, your My USA Cycling account has been activated for voting and you’ll be prompted to vote upon login.   • USA Cycling announced today that the 2008 Bill Woodul Race Mechanic Clinic is scheduled for January 10-13 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.   • Attention All USA Cycling Registered Clubs: It’s time again for the annual USA Cycling “Club of the Year” awards. USA Cycling will award three overall Club of the Year awards, plus seven special awards on December 14. USA Cycling’s Club of the Year awards are designed to recognize USA Cycling clubs that have made exceptional efforts to develop programs and promote all aspects of competitive cycling.  Overall Club of the Year awards will go to USA Cycling clubs in three different divisions: Division I (76+ members), Division II (30-75 members) and Division III (1-29 members). Winners will be determined by how well-rounded and active a club was in the 2007 season in proportion to its number of members. Factors include the number of cycling events the club held, competitive results, member clinics and seminars, as well as club and community activities. Special awards will also be given to clubs for the following seven categories: Junior Programs, Master Programs, Track Programs, Mountain Bike Programs, Women Programs, Collegiate Development Programs and New Programs.   • Positions Open at USA Cycling: USA Cycling is currently accepting applications for two open positions – the Director of Sponsorships and Business Development and a PHP Programmer/Analyst. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Sponsorships and Business Development will be responsible for building a revenue stream to better enable USA Cycling to achieve its strategic objectives. The position’s main objective is to develop substantial sponsor, supplier and affinity partner relationships within the business community.  From developing programs for new sponsorship opportunities, to selling the programs, to successful implementation, this position requires a person with classical strategic skills, an analytical mind, and an entrepreneurial zeal for “making things happen.” The Director of Sponsorships and Business Development will be responsible for the full cycle of development for sponsorship, supplier and affinity partner relationships for USA Cycling’s programs.  He or she will lead the effort to execute all necessary research, due diligence, business development plans, programs, negotiations, and agreements to fully implement business development strategies. The position of PHP Programmer/Analyst requires extensive PHP experience in a data-drive environment using SQL. Demonstrated analysis experience and Linux knowledge are also required along with excellent customer relations skills.  The job includes gathering user requirements, creating application specifications, programming and testing the solutions, as well as other duties as assigned.  This is a full-time salaried position based in the Colorado Springs office.
