Pic, Landis secure overall NRC titles

Colorado Springs, CO (September 19, 2006) -- The 2006 National Racing Calendar Series ended last weekend with the Parker Main Street Omnium in Parker, Colorado. When the points were totaled, Tina Pic (Dahlonega, Ga./Colavita Cooking Light) and Floyd Landis (Murietta, Calif./Phonak) rode away with the women’s and men’s individual titles. Health Net and Team Lipton took the men’s and women’s team titles.

This was Pic’s third year in a row to earn the top spot in the rankings. She won the series in 2000, 2004, 2005, and now 2006. It is the first NRC individual title for Landis.

Pic notched wins at the Garret Lemire Criterium, the Sunny King Criterium, Bikejam, the Tour of Sommerville, the CapTech Classic, the CSC Invitational, and the Bank of America Invitational Criterium. The four-time winner was in the lead for most of this year’s series. She ended the summer with 2106 points, 149 points ahead of second place finisher Kristin Armstrong (Boise, Idaho/TEam Lipton), who lead the series earlier in the summer. Coming in third for the ladies was Armstrong’s Team Lipton teammate Laura Van Gilder (Cresco, Pa./TEam Lipton) with 1580 points.

propelled himself into the leader’s position with overall wins at the Amgen Tour of California and the Ford Tour de Georgia. Though he has not raced since the 2006 Tour de France, his 1270 points were strong enough to keep him in the top position for the duration of the series. He was almost caught by Karl Menzies (Health Net) however, who ended the series in second with a close 1253 points. Greg Henderson (NZL / Health Net) rounded out the top three with 1189.

In the men’s team standings, Health Net claimed the most points – 5,255. Over 700 points behind was Toyota-United Pro Cycling Team with 4,553 and the Navigators Insurance Cycling Team with 4,390. On the women’s side, Kristin Armstrong’s and Laura Van Gilder’s TEam Lipton secured the top spot with 5,084 points. Pic’s Colavita/Cooking Light Women's Cycling Team finished second with 3,845 and Victory Brewing rounded out the top three with 2,501.
