Track Cycling: Outside the United States
Track racing has evolved differently in different countries around the world.
For example, in Australia, the five mile scratch race has become a race to gamble
on, and usually caries a significant prize for those who beat the record time.
Some riders might pay off other riders to work with them in an attempt to break
the record. Additionally in Japan, Keirin racing has developed into a spectacle
comparable to horseracing in the U.S., where the public can bet on riders and
the purse is very large. In Europe, there are extended track races called Six
Day Races. Riders compete for six consecutive nights in a variety of events. Some
longer events, like the points race are cumulative, meaning the total event could
be 540 laps but is broken down into six 90 lap points races, where the points
would be added from night to night. Track racing around the globe is very exciting;
and whether racing in the U.S. or enjoying the spectacle in another country, the
cycling enthusiast will not be disappointed.
