NCC: Calendar winds into penultimate event in Central New York
The USA Cycling National Criterium Calendar (NCC) continued into its penultimate event last weekend as riders took to the streets of Binghamton, N.Y. to compete in the Chris Thater Memorial.
After winning the women's race on Saturday evening, Laura van Gilder (Cresco, Pa./Mellow Mushroom Racing) collected 100 points and further solidified her second-place position in the NCC women's standings. Erica Allar (Tucson, Ariz./RideClean-PatentIt.com), who finished second to van Gilder on Saturday, has clinched the top spot of the women's standings with 827 points. Sarah Fader (Morrisville, N.C./Pepper Palace-Spin-Tech Training p/b ABRC) holds third place with 299 points, 35 points ahead of fourth-place Samantha Schneider (West Allis, Wisc./Team TIBCO-To the Top). After finishing third in Binghamton, Jennifer Purcell (Austin, Texas/Team TIBCO-To the Top) holds fifth place, only one point Schneider.
In the NCC women's team standings, Team TIBCO-To the Top leads the pack with 992 points. Optum Pro Cycling p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies sits in second place with 633 points while Exergy TWENTY12 is 79 points out of second place and only 33 points ahead of fourth-place NOW and Novartis for MS. Vanderkitten-Focus remains in fifth place with 521 points.
Luke Keough (Sandwich, Mass./Team Mountain Khakis p/b SmartStop) was the big mover in the NCC men's standings. Keough placed eighth in the race to collect 35 points and jump from fourth in the previous standings into second place.
Hilton Clarke (AUS/UnitedHealthcare p/b Maxxis) has clinched the top spot with 638 points. Keough has 444 points, which is only 16 points ahead of his brother, Jacobe Keough (Sandwich, Mass./UnitedHealthcare p/b Maxxis), who sits in third place. Carlos Alzate Escobar (COL/Team Exergy) is in fourth place with 424 points while Ken Hanson (Santa Barbara, Calif./Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) rounds out the top five with 335 points.
The men's race took place Sunday afternoon, under sunny skies in central New York.
For the second time in five years, Kyle Wamsley (Topton, Pa./Jamis-Sutter Home) topped the men's podium. Wamsley emerged from a breakaway of nine riders to edge Travis Livermon (Winterville, N.C./Team Mountain Khakis p/b SmartStop) and Bruno Langlois (CAN/Garneau-Quebec).
UnitedHealthcare p/b Maxxis has clinched the top spot of the NCC men's team standings with 1,345 points. Team Mountain Khakis p/b SmartStop is in second place with 832 points while Jamis-Sutter Home moved up one spot into third place with 709 points. Team Exergy dropped one spot into fourth place with 678 points while Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies sits in fifth place with 552 points.
