Nate Whitman Election Statement

Nate Whitman
Mountain Bike Committee - At Large

I would be honored to represent my fellow mountain bike enthusiasts and athletes as a member of the USA Cycling Committee for Mountain Bike.  I have been a member of USA Cycling and an avid cyclist of all varieties, since 2001.  Outside of cycling, I hold a Bachelors degree in Human Biology, and a Masters in Organizational Theory, both from Stanford University.  As a professional, I have held strategic consulting roles at prominent firms large and small, including Live Nation / Ticketmaster, Life Time Fitness, and Sony Pictures Entertainment.  But most importantly, as a cyclist, I have experienced the joy and excitement of the sport, in life changing ways, from a complete novice and fumbling beginner, to 13 years later, a pro-level mountain bike athlete racing side by side with Tinker Juarez, Todd Wells, Dave Wiens and more.
I entered my first mountain bike event (the Cal State Series at Big Bear) as a beginner in 2001.  I was out of shape, overweight, and looking to change my life.  I finished dead last.  Literally, last in my category and slowest time of the day.  But, rather than being discouraged, I was intrigued.  I wanted to know how to become more fit, how to choose equipment, how to find great trails and fun groups of people to ride with.   I worked hard and read books, poured over early generation web forums, and tried to improve, while having fun.
Over the course of the next 5 years, l would go on to lose 60 pounds, and win California State Championships, first in Sport, then Expert category.  Then earn upgrades into Semi-pro and on into Pro.  I never would have believed this was possible, and cycling literally has changed my life.  11 times finisher of the Leadville 100, La Ruta, and USAC events like the Pro XCT, Nationals, and Sea Otter.  I have contributed my business skills as an expert consultant to companies like Specialized, Life Time Fitness, and Herbalife Nutrition.  I have promoted events, lead clinics, and generally done everything I can to contribute, give back, and help others experience the thrill and life transformation that mountain biking and the sport and community of cycling have given me.
As I progress in age and my competitive abilities, I am looking to step it up and do more, be more, contribute more.  I want my years of involvement in cycling to pay off in something bigger for the community.  I hope that I can achieve this with your support, as an At Large Mountain Bike representative to the USA Cycling Committee.
