May 2013 Technical Director Update

Hey All,

The snows have melted, except at A-Basin, and the championship season is truly upon us. We just had a fantastic Collegiate National Road Championships out in Ogden, UT. Now we are setting our sights on our new Pro Road Championships in Chattanooga at the end of the month. I can pretty much say goodbye to my Technical Manager, as he will be working 16 or so on-site registrations in the next 4 months. So let's dive right in.

Officials Clothing Program
As you have noticed, we do have our new clothing program up and running. In case you haven't seen the new store (or bookmarked the link) you can check it out at http://usacycling.drivemarketing.com/.

Now that most of you have had a chance to look around a bit, we would like to ask your opinion regarding any items that you would like to see that we have not yet provided. Please take the short survey at the following link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/OfficialsClothingNewStore.

NASO Group Registration
For all of you interested in renewing your NASO registration through our group discount, it is that time of year again. We have set up our online registration through the officials clinic page. Registration will close June 10th, 2013 at 11:59 MDT.

If you are already a NASO member and would like to take advantage of this, you can still register through us and you will be refunded the portion of your unused membership and reset to have an account that goes through June, which is our annual renewal period.

Rule of the Month
Continuing last month's move to the Official's Blog. We've posted May's double feature "ROTM", dealing with the new prize list rules and junior aero equipment, it can be viewed at http://www.usacycling.org/blog/usa-cycling-officials/may-rules-of-the-month.htm. The comments have been turned on, so if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or considerations please feel free to let us know about it.

Risk Protection Talk
Last month we introduced you to Jonathan Whiteman, the new Risk Protection Manager for USA Cycling. This month, we're going to introduce a new section "Risk Protection Talk". As USA Cycling's "front-line risk managers", officials need to be kept abreast of USA Cycling policies on risk protection, which is where this section comes into play.

In this month's article, Athlete Safety is Everybody's Responsibility, we talk about the need for everyone to remain vigilant against different forms of abuse, and the importance of USA Cycling's SafeSport initiative.

Elections
It is election time again! Nomination notices will be up by June 1st. Since our governance changes a couple of years ago, the elections are all based on qualified groups. For example, each sport committee has positions that are dedicated to particular stakeholders, such as officials, athletes, race directors, industry, etc. There is a qualified pool of candidates as well as a qualified pool of voters. The only positions that absolutely everyone can vote for are At Large positions.

For the 2013 election, there are two official’s positions open. One of them is on the track sport committee. The qualified candidate pool consists of all National or International Commissaires in track cycling. The other is on the professional committee. The qualified candidate pool for that one is all international road commissaires. The qualified voter pool for both consists of all level B and higher officials. So, when the nomination process is over and the elections begin on July 15, many of you will have the opportunity to elect those representatives to the committees. In addition to the Commissaire-specific positions, there are At-Large positions open on the mountain bike committee and the cyclo-cross committee that you would be able to vote for.

That is all for this one.
