Mark Orton Election Statement

Mark Orton
Coach - Mountain Bike Sport Committee

My name is Mark Orton, I live in Broken Arrow, OK and I am a USA Cycling Level 1 Coach who would love to be your voice on the USAC Mountain Bike Committee as the Coach Representative. I have been a part of the cycling community for over 10 years. During this time, along with being a coach, I have been an active racer, race promoter, served on state cycling boards, served as the VP of the State Championship Mtb Race Series, and have created and organized new teams. As a racer, I progressed
from a Beginner (Cat 3) to holding a Pro racing license for several years.

My coaching has grown over the years through education, experience, networking, and in a big way, due to my mentors. I also take every chance I get to keep educating myself on the trends and information that is out there. If my athletes have a question, I like to have an answer, so I'll research it to find their answer, and it becomes one more thing in my knowledge bank. I have had the opportunity to serve as the Head Coach for the USA Cycling Junior Mtb Development Camp and Talent 10 Camps for the past 3 years. This year I was provided the opportunity to serve as a coach at the Olympic Training Center, in Colorado Springs, for a Paralympic Cycling Camp put on by the USOC. In addition to doing camps for USA Cycling, I have also hosted webinars for the Coaching Education Program, such as one on Preparation for Endurance Mountain Bike Races.

In an attempt to be at the top of my game as a coach, I have obtained my Certified Power Based Trainer and Certified Skills Instructor certifications through USA Cycling. After obtaining my Levell Certification last year, I was approached by USACto create a small coaching committee to look into some areas of concern that USA Cycling had. lied these discussions, and presented our findings and results to the Coaching Education department of USAC.

Locally, I hold several free skills clinics each year. Knowing that our future depends on the younger generations, I tend to focus a lot of my free time teaching skills, tactics and strategy to the junior and college aged racers. I take the lessons I've learned from the junior development and id camps, and adapt them to the local juniors and help them progress and improve their skills and confidence.

I feel that my racing and coaching experiences, as well as my dedication to helping create a better environment for current and future mountain bikers, makes me an excellent choice for the USAC Mountain Bike Committee - Coach Representative. Thank you for taking the time to consider me for your vote!
