Points of Interest

  • On May 12, 2010, at the Pan Am Championships in Aguascalientes, Mexico, Lauren along with Dotsie Bausch, and Sarah Hammer set a world record in the team pursuit. Their time of 3:19.569 was nearly two seconds faster than the previous record of 3:22.552 set by a team from New Zealand only seven weeks earlier at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships on March 25, 2010. With this result, Tamayo, Bausch, and Hammer became the first women's team pursuit squad in the world to break the 3:20 barrier. Their world record was re-set by Danielle King, Laura Trott and Joanna Roswell as the British trio rode a 3:15.720 en route to a world title in Melbourne, Australia in April of 2012.
  • Her nickname, La Diabla, was given to her by her loving teammates. Translated, it means "The Devil" but it is a nickname of affection so she has come to embrace it. The nickname's origin came from the discovery that she is a different person on the bike versus off. You can guess which version is on and which is off.

Personal


Lauren Tamayo (née Franges) grew up just outside of Trexlertown, Pa., a rural town that's known as the "go-to" place for track racing on the Eastern Seaboard. Her father wanted to give the track's development program a try and encouraged Lauren to check it out. It was not love at first sight for Lauren, but after a few sessions it seemed like a natural fit so she continued with the program through the rest of the summer. Then came a junior national title the following year and it was clear that Lauren had talent on the track. To stay fit for track, Lauren put her tires to the pavement and proved that she had transferable skills once she started stacking up podium finishes.
 
As one of the most versatile and accomplished racers, Lauren has scored significant results, such as third in general classification at the Tour of Bretagne with the national development program and second in the Tour of New Zealand's sprint competition. Lauren has been regarded as the backbone of many teams like Victory Brewing, Lipton and TIBCO, however she points to her teammates, notably Sandy Espeseth, Nicole Demars, and Kristin Armstrong, who taught her how to be professional while developing as an athlete. Her husband, Mike, also gets credit for "getting her butt into gear" when she needs extra motivation.
 
She trains hard in and around her adopted hometown of Asheville, N.C., where a dedicated cycling community and some of the best roads in the country provide a perfect setting for her to take focused aim at track racing for 2012. The absence of a venue in Asheville doesn't seem to hinder Lauren, who succeeded in setting a world record for the women's team pursuit in early spring of 2010 at the Pan Am Championships in Mexico. Admittedly she spends a lot of time traveling back and forth from Asheville to Los Angeles, where she trains on the track at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

When she's not training or racing, she enjoys being home and taking advantage of the amazing restaurants that Asheville has to offer. She also tries to take time to catch up with friends since she spends so much time traveling. To help her relax and recover, she enjoys watching movies during her down time.
