Juniors and Singlespeed dominate CX National Championships on Day 5

January 7, 2017 (Hartford, Conn.) -- Ready, set, snow. Junior cyclocross athletes took center stage at a frosty and snow-covered Riverside Park on Saturday for the pentulimate day of competition at the 2017 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships. Stars-and-Stripes jerseys were awarded in six juniors divisions. Saturday also crowned men’s and women’s singlespeed champions, as well as non-championship industry riders.

Fierce competition for junior titles began with this year’s Colorado CX champion, 14-year-old Ryan Campbell (Lakewood, Colo./Avout Racing), hitting the line in 17:28 for the junior men’s 13-14 division title. Lizzy Gunsalus (Dudley, Mass./AP Junior Development), last year’s silver medalist in the same event, pedaled smoothly over frozen ruts to win in 19:52.

The junior men’s 11-12 championship was earned by local rider David Thompson (New Cannan, Conn./CT Cycling Advancement Program) for completing the course in 18:31, his second national title in two years. Another Colorado CX champion, Kaya Musgrave (LIttleton, Colo./Avout Racing) repeated as the junior women’s 11-12 champion this year, nipping Haydn Hludzinski (Boulder, Colo./Boulder Junior Cycling) by two seconds.

The reigning junior 15-16 champion from Minnesota, Nick Carter (Minneapolis, Minn./NorthStar Development Cycling), took the junior men’s 15-16 national title in 31:53. Katie Clouse (LIttleton, Colo./Alpha Bicycle Co.-Vista Subaru) defended her junior women’s 15-16 title, winning for a second year in 28:02.

In the non-championship industry races, Eric Thompson (Shoreview, Minn./HED pb Molten Speed Wax) held off Bryan Fosler (Madison, Wisc./801 W. Madison) by three seconds for the win in 28:02. Caitlin Bernstein (Oakland, Calif./unattached) claimed the women’s division in 34:09.

Saturday concluded amidst accumulating snow with the popular singlespeed competitions. Melinda McCutcheon (Salt Lake City, Utah/DNA Cotton Sox) slipped past Corey Coogan Cisek (Minneapolis, Minn./Power Fix CX) in the final chicane to secure the women’s singlespeed event in 40:38. Isaac Neff (Madison, Wisc./Neff Cycle Service) drove at the front to secure the top spot for the men’s singlespeed 119-rider field in 42:18.

The U.S. Cyclocross National Championships will conclude Sunday with the junior men’s 17-18, and the women’s and men’s elite and U23 divisions. There will also be a 10 & under non-championship race.  Live streaming will be available on USA Cycling’s YouTube channel, as well as coverage live on Facebook, beginning at 9 a.m. ET.
