James Carney Election Statement
Track Committee - Eligible Athlete (Male)
Hello. Thank you for taking the time to read my statement. I would like to serve as your Male Athlete Representative to the 2012 USA Cycling Track Committee.
My name is James Carney. I began racing in 1976 at the age of 8. From my first year to 2012 track racing has been the main focus of my life. I have been involved with USA Cycling in varying degrees and in multiple cycling disciplines. I am a two-time Olympian, two-time World Cup Champion and a 22 time Elite Track National Champion. I have coached athletes on Olympic, World Championship, World Cup, Pan American, and Junior Worlds Teams. Beyond USAC representation, I have trained at the Australian Institute of Sport as well as competed with some of my athletes in the Australian Track Nationals and the Australian Track Carnivals. I am a former Board of Trustee of USAC. While a Board of Trustee, my personal proposition containing additional National Championship events for Juniors along with improved and simplified junior gearing restrictions was passed.
My knowledge base is built on a foundation of personal experiences. My long-lasting involvement with track cycling has given me the opportunity to see the evolution of track cycling first hand over the last three decades.
It is my vision to bring track racing back to the masses. The establishment of a true National Track Program that coincides, not conflicts, with current NRC, NCC and USA CRITS Series events is a serious need. I also want to bring Track Nationals to the summer where it had previously flourished for decades. The current dates for Elite Track Nationals do not cater to the majority. By late September most of the track racing season across the country is over. Another drawback is collegiate cyclists are ultimately forced to choose between Collegiate and Elite Nationals.
These are just a few of the subjects that I would immediately address as your Male Eligible Athlete on the Track Committee. I will listen to ideas, your suggestions and concerns. I want the voices of the USA Cycling members to be heard and I promise to address the concerns as the members intended.
I love track racing. It has been my life and it has been very difficult for me to see it underperform for such a long time. If elected, I guarantee that I will do my best as your Male Eligible Athlete on the Track Committee.
