Cyclists total 24 medals in Parapan American Games
On the road, the U.S. riders collected five gold medals, six silver and a bronze while adding four gold medals, five silver and three bronze at the velodrome.
Oz Sanchez (San Diego, Calif.) and Jennifer Schuble (Houston, Texas) each won a pair of gold medals. Sanchez, who is a Marine Corps veteran, tallied two gold medals, maintaining his road time trial undefeated streak in the Mixed Time Trial H1-4 and Men’s Road Race H2-4. Schuble topped the podium in the women’s 500m time trial C1-5 and the Women's Individual Pursuit C4-5. Monica Bascio (Evergreen, Colo.), Allison Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Greta Neimanas (Chicago, Ill.), Steve Peace (San Diego, Calif.) and the tandem of Clark Rachfal (Towson, Md.) and his pilot Dave Swanson (Tucson, Ariz.) each climbed to the top step throughout the competition.
Jones established a pair of American records at the velodrome, posting the best time in American history in the 500m time trial and the 3km individual pursuit.
The tandem of Kara Whitsell (Eugene, Ore.) and her pilot Lisa Turnbull (Springfield, Ore.) totaled four silver medals. Whitsell and Turnbull were the runners-up in the Mixed Time Trial, Women’s Individual Pursuit, Women's 1000m Time Trial and the Women’s Road Race. Neimanas and Matt Updike (Denver, Colo.) each registered a pair of silver medals while Vincent Juarez (San Jose, Calif.), Michael Farrell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Peace added one silver medal apiece.
Jones registered a pair of bronze medals while Farrell and the tandem of Rachfal and Swanson each recorded one third-place finish.
In all, the United States totaled the second-most gold medals (51) throughout all sports at the Parapan American Games, but finished third in the overall medal count, collecting 132 total medals, including 47 silver and 34 bronze. Brazil topped the medal count with 197 while Mexico recorded 165 total medals.
