| Personal | | Haywood was born in Wilmington, Del. and graduated from high school there in 1989. She earned a B.A. in International Studies from West Virginia University in 1993, and calls Davis, W.Va. home. Only when Trek/Volkswagen chose Sue for the world team in 2002, did she realize that she could make a living as a pro mountain biker. She plans on sticking with it as long as she can improve and pay the bills. | | Favorite Pastimes | | Sue’s greatest passion, besides mountain biking, is nordic skiing. She also enjoys telemark skiing, snowboarding, traveling, reading, and identifying trees and plants. During her first years racing the local circuit, Sue worked as a whitewater rafting guide and an instructor at a kid’s adventure camp. She spends the winter months as a snowboard and ski instructor. | | How They Got Here | | Sue took up mountain biking in 1991 as a student at West Virginia University. The trails there were really great, plus it was a good way to get around campus. After begging her father to buy her a bike, Sue began riding in the state forest every chance she got. She competed in her first race that same year, raced amateur and expert classes for seven years, and then completed three very successful years with the Trek Volkswagen East Coast Regional Team. The team gave her the structure she needed to develop professionally. Her determination and talent caught the eye of the Trek Volkswagen professional team and earned her a spot on the international squad. 2004 will be her third year as a member of the No. 1 UCI-ranked team. | | Did You Know? | • During college, Sue spent two months in Tanzania and climbed Mt. Kilamanjaro – the highest point in Africa.
