Anthony Thaller Election Statement

Anthony Thaller
Mountain Bike Committee - At-Large

Mountain Biking is my sport. I happened upon it 13 years ago when I stepped into a local bike shop, looking for a new ride to check out a recently discovered trail.  That day, I discovered a part of me that was missing; now found in the sport of mountain biking…racing, trail care, race promotion and heading up the Illinois State Mountain Bike Series.

Growing the sport of mountain biking is a passion of mine. As a leading member of the Peoria Area Mountain Bike Association (PAMBA), I am the Race Director for our 4 local races held annually and permitted through USA Cycling. We host races with the purpose of providing funds for trail care creation and maintenance; a responsibility that spans across six separate parks systems.  Our funds from events and races goes right back into taking care of the extensive trails within those parks. Within my role as Race Director, I saw a need for Illinois to have a state mountain bike race series and initiated the start up of the Illinois Homegrown Race Series. The IHRS is still going strong and continues to grow each year. This year we have a total of 11 races with 7 different not-for-profit clubs throughout the state.  I am thrilled to have new junior-racers showing up at all of our events and am excited to see our kids’ races draw a variety of little ones; from those on trikes, striders and training wheels to speedy 9-year-olds getting their first taste of mountain biking competition.  Without the youngsters, our sport is nothing. As the founder and director of the state-wide series, I am proud to see the future of mountain biking.

While I love to ride and race my bike as much as possible, if we don’t have good trails to ride what good is the bike? For me this means an increased level of contribution.  I have taken a focused interest in the layout and building of trails by participating in and presenting at several IMBA training sessions and summits. Over the course of a decade, I have become proficient at building, maintaining and teaching others about trail development, as well as creating unique trail features such as custom bridges and retaining walls. In 2012, I was recognized for my leadership in trail creation and maintenance through PAMBA’s Volunteer of the Year Award.

My goal is to continually build up the sport of mountain biking. It would be an honor and privilege to partner with the USA Cycling Mountain Bike Committee towards this endeavor.

Respectfully Submitted,
Anthony Thaller
